Hold onto your Spanx everyone: Leighbones is in the house! I am so privileged to be the first person to grab an exclusive interview with her in honor of the release of her upcoming memoir: “Is My Crazy Showing?” The book cover alone made me want to read the book and talk to her more. She is hilarious, so I know her book had to be good. I have just received my advanced copy (and no, you can’t have a peek-sies,) but I couldn’t wait for you all to meet Leigh.
Malleable Mom: Thank you so much for talking to us! Can you tell the people who don’t know you a little about yourself?
Leigh Baker: Most people describe me as “crazy” (hence the title of my memoir.) But in a less clinical way, and in more of a fun way! I am the person who says out loud the things that everyone else is thinking but too afraid to say. I am the “fun one” people invite to the party – drink too much, dance on the table, flash the boobs kinda person. I’m extremely passionate and loyal.
MM: I’ll be inviting you to all my future parties then. Tell us why you wrote a book.
LB: I wrote this book for a few reasons, but mostly to make my friends laugh. I’ve always had a natural desire to entertain people. But in 2009, as a stay-at-home mom, I started feeling a strange new mixture of boredom and courage. I craved adventure and freedom. In
a moment of delusion a bold act of personal heroism, I registered for a full marathon, even though I wasn’t a runner. I trained for five months and documented my journey by emailing my family and friends about my self-imposed runners woes – blisters, wedgies and bad sports bras compounded by the mental anguish of fear and self-doubt. I did it all with endless sarcasm, wit and humor. The emails were intended to be nothing more than an entertaining Saturday morning read, but they went viral and spread like wildfire. My running alias, Steady Betty, became famous! The overwhelming response I received was heartwarming. I received countless notes of encouragement claiming, “You should be a writer! You HAVE to write a book! You’re so funny!” And so, here I am.
LB: My family consists of me, my husband, our 13 year old daughter named Felicity (after that show!) and our 10 year old son named Cameron. I spend my days like most stay-at-home moms – doing laundry, preparing meals, cleaning and also writing.
MM: What is your guilty pleasure?
LB: Hmm…..like food? 5 pound bags of peanut M&Ms. Or shopping? Anything Kate Spade!
MM: Now, we are buddies, so I happen to know that in spite of your beautiful exterior, you are a hopeless potty mouth like me. What’s your favorite cuss word?
LB: Any form of the word FUCK.
MM: Mmmm. A classic. What kinds of things are you relaxed about, and what kinds of thing do you get uptight about?
LB: Strangely enough, I am relaxed about major problems or injuries, but loose my shit over stupid shit like spilled milk or someone tracking dirt through the house – or the WORSE someone spilling something on my white sofa!!
MM: You know, I think this is a very common Mom-thing…or a parent thing. I haven’t asked too many Dads about it. Here’s another random question for you, but it’s one I like to ask people: how do you love on people, and how do you know that you are loved?
LB: I’m overly affectionate with kisses to my kids & husband. It annoys them so much. I love to leave notes in my kids’ lunch boxes or make pancakes in the shape of their names, stuff like that. Knowing (and believing I’m loved is difficult) – I suppose when someone does something unexpected for me – if my husband get me coffee or a kid makes something for me. I blab and make a big deal for my birthday every year and for the most part people don’t give a shit but last year my husband gave me a gift each day for the entire month and that made me feel really loved. 🙂
MM: Where will you be in 10 years?
LB: I’m certain my Alzheimers will be in full force! No joke.
MM: Tell us something interesting about you that we wouldn’t know.
LB: I am absolutely obsessed with the FBI. I interviewed with them before I got married and made it to the top 3 candidates! But those fuckers didn’t hire me.
MM: Woah! That is absolutely their loss. Though if you are really the dance on the table type, maybe that wasn’t the best career choice for you! I’m glad your Life took you down this path instead. Leigh Baker, thank you so much for answering my questions, and letting us peek behind your straight jacket a little bit.
LB: You’re welcome!
MM: “Is My Crazy Showing?” will be available for purchase the second week of May. Go on over to Leigh’s Facebook page and give her a Like so you can follow her daily funny and buy her book when it releases.
I’m Leigh. I’m a wife, mom, writer and FBI wannabe. My philosophy is you can’t hide your crazy, so you may as
well embrace it. I embrace the crazy by finding laughter in all situations.
